Internship Proposal: Distance Parenting Education
For the Fall 2012 EDET 650 Educational Technology Internship, I propose to use the SC State K-12 Internet Safety Curriculum standards, appropriate Common Core Curriculum standards, and materials from Common Sense Media as a basis for creating an online/TV course on Internet and Media Literacy and Safety instruction for parents. This project fills a district need because in order to participate in E-Rate (which provides 20-90% discounts on telecommunications and internet access for schools and libraries through an Federal Communications Commission program) schools must comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) which allows for censoring of materials inappropriate for minors in schools and the education of students, staff, and parents about internet safety.
In my position as Parent Involvement Coordinator for the Colleton County School District collaborating with groups within the district to provide information to parents is a large part of my job description. Internet Safety, Social Networking, and Cyber Bullying are all subjects frequently requested by parents in surveys my office uses to determine topics for parenting classes. Through compiling existing materials, creating new content, and collaborating with Colleton County High School staff and students, not only will I create an online resource to support our district’s compliance with CIPA, but I will also inform and educate parents, and increase the participation in the district’s parenting sessions by providing opportunities for working parents to participate in the program on their own schedule.
I expect this project to require approximately 100 hours to complete under the supervision of and collaboration with District Title I Director Mrs. Catherine Turner, M.Ed. and High School Media Specialist Mrs. Lynne Douglas, NBCT, SLIS. The completed project will include an online handbook to assist school parent facilitators, media specialists, and administrators in using the resource; a 4-part web-drama series highlighting the key components of the SC K-12 internet safety and CIPA standards: Digital Citizenship, Media Literacy, Cyber Ethics, and Personal Safety; 2 instructional sessions for parents available via YouTube and our High School TV station (aired on local access cable PRTC Channel 25), along with a website with links to all of the products, formative and summative assessments, and additional resources for parents and students in grades k-12 available at http://parents.ccsdtitle1.org. Creation of web, print, video, and radio promotional material for this program will also be required. Design, implementation, and evaluation of the project will begin immediately and will be be complete by the district mandated November 30, 2012 deadline.
